Nothing/Everything

A Reflection on the Release of Our First Collection

The modern fashion world exists within dualities: luxury and necessity, art and function, creation and destruction, nothing and everything. Our first collection, Nothing/Everything, was our launch into trying to find our space within this world of ambiguities. It has been a pleasure, for me as a member of this team, to witness the development of this brand into what it has become and to watch you embrace it. Thank you for joining us on this journey of growth and evolution.

As a young project, Melody Bloom has been an ever-evolving brand. Originating as a music promotion company and now transitioning into a fashion brand, Melody Bloom intends to continue its journey of transformation, seeking to carve out its place within the ambiguity of fashion. Rooted in sustainability as our number one priority, we acknowledge the challenge of establishing ourselves in an inherently unsustainable industry. This evolution will take time, and to everyone who has supported us—whether by purchasing from our collection or simply observing and engaging with our brand since its inception—we extend our heartfelt thanks. When you buy a product from Melody Bloom, you are not just buying an item; you are becoming an active part of our mission to change the fashion industry forever.

After the release of our first collection, we have engaged in extensive brainstorming sessions to determine our next steps. Throughout these discussions, the concept of circularity has emerged as a guiding principle for our future direction. Circular fashion, a term increasingly prevalent within the industry, embodies the idea that for fashion to be truly sustainable, it must operate within a closed-loop system of renewability.

We envision a future where every piece we create can be reused, repurposed, or recycled, ensuring that our products have a life cycle that minimizes waste and maximizes sustainability. This commitment to circularity is not just a passing trend for us; it is a foundational principle that will influence our design choices, production methods, and overall business model moving forward.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support fuels our commitment to sustainability and innovation, and we are excited to continue building a brand that not only offers high-quality fashion but also contributes to a more responsible and thoughtful industry.

With gratitude,

The Melody Bloom Team

The World of Sustainable (and Unsustainable Fashion)

Most fashion experts would advise you to leave your sunglasses off as we move into the new year because the future of the sustainable fashion industry is not looking bright. With inflation increasing globally, consumers are becoming more conscious of price when purchasing clothing pieces. According to McKinsey’s State of Fashion 2025 report, the percentage of global fashion leaders who considered sustainability a main priority has now fallen from 29% in 2024 to 18% in 2025.

This decline is largely due to the growing desire for cheaper clothing, which is often provided by widely unsustainable fast fashion brands. Additionally, there is an increasing interest in exploring artificial intelligence rather than focusing on sustainability, as many businesses perceive AI as a more profitable avenue.

McKinsey’s State of Fashion 2025 also projects that within the next five years, global fashion consumption will rise by 63%, reaching 102 million tons. This alarming increase means that fashion could account for over one-quarter of the global carbon emissions budget—a horrifying statistic. With most major brands prioritizing profit and technological advancements over sustainability, the industry is facing a critical challenge.

At Melody Bloom, however, we believe that sustainable circular fashion can be just as economical while leading us toward a brighter future. We are keeping our sunglasses on because we truly believe that we can change the trend and create a better future for the world. Join us in being hopeful in moving into a brighter fashion future in 2025.

A Eulogy for David Lynch

This week, one of my biggest heroes and inspirations, David Lynch, has sadly passed at the age of 78 after being forced to evacuate his home due to the fires in Southern California (information on how to help with fire relief provided later in newsletter). In this section we will look back on some of the best moments of Lynchian costuming in David Lynch’s long career as director.

How You Can Help With the South California Fires

With the tragic Palisades and Eaton fires striking Los Angeles within the last few weeks, we urge you to do anything you can to help out the over 100,000 people who were forced to flee their homes in the last few weeks with many losing their homes, belongings, and lives. If you are in a position to help, we urge you to donate to those who have lost everything.

Here are some ways you can donate:

Meet Our Team

Rachel Anton

Hi, I’m Rachel! I’m a Cognitive Science Design and Interaction major with a passion for design and all things creative. I’m originally from Indonesia, and I love exploring how design can connect people and ideas in meaningful ways. Outside of academics, I enjoy cooking, creating art, and collaborating with others to bring projects to life. Excited to be part of this team and looking forward to getting to know everyone!

Rosalyn Weng

Hey, I'm Rosalyn! I'm the videographer and editor for Melody Bloom double majoring in Clinical Psychology and Cinematic Arts at UCSD. Over the past few years, I’ve worked as a freelance filmmaker, participating in film festivals and collaborating with independent creators. I’m very new to the company and joined on (very) impromptu notice, but it’s been an invaluably rewarding opportunity that I haven’t regretted for a second. Outside of filmmaking, some of my random pasttimes are writing poetry, playing guitar, boxing, Stardew Valley, and learning sign language.

Thank you for Supporting Us!
